HISTORY AND OBJECTIVES

Welcome to Figurative Expressionism - Rhinohorn Artists

Between 1967-1978 and then again in 1994 a group of twelve figurative artists exhibited together under the name of "Rhino Horn". Each of these exhibitions included "Rhino Horn" artists and "guest exhibitors" making a total of fourteen presenting artists. They chose the "Rhino Horn" name to signify the strength and virility of their work. Please visit our online Art Gallery for a complete listing of the images of these notable artists and their "friends".

These significant American artists have persevered through all phases of the last four decades. The importance of this group in art history must be permanently recorded as they and their "friends" have continued the figurative strain of German Expressionism in the United States. This segment of American paintings and sculptures retains its originality in the face of conformity and has masterfully recorded the angst, violence, and happenings of these most turbulent times.

The Oakleigh Collection is proud to have assembled many of these works and will request other collectors to contribute paintings or sculptures towards exhibitions soon to be scheduled for the major museums. Approximately eighty works from twenty-six artists will be exhibited.

We presently seek all interested directors and curators of museums, art historians, authors and scholars who wish to assist in planning the exhibitions and also in helping to create a catalogue. The people who can lead this effort should have the perception and appreciation of this group because their enthusiasm will help establish the "Rhino Horn" artists in the permanent record of art history. Please contact us today with any comments and recommendations you may wish to contribute.
